So this was my first project of the year and really my first sewing victory.  I really wanted to make this for Jay.  I love scrapbooking but I loved the idea of using fabric because he could throw it around, squish it, get his grubby paws on it and really enjoy it as a sensory object.  Unfortunately, I didn’t take pictures as I went along, but it really wasn’t too difficult and will try and describe what I did step by step.  I had never used a sewing machine before…and borrowed my sister’s to do this.  I had a great sense of achievement when it was done and now I’m getting requests to make others!

So the first thing I think is important to do is plan your book on paper.  It needs to be organised in double page spreads so it’s a good idea to jot down all that…

      “Why is she crying??”

I get asked this A LOT and often these are the suggested reasons..

      1. “She needs fed.”
This is my husbands favourite. She’s crying so she MUST need fed – right? Let’s be honest, what he’s really saying is, “She’s crying and I don’t like it, take her back!”

      Crying baby

      2. “She’s teething.”
She appears to have been teething since birth…that’s all I have to say in this.

      3. “It’s a growth spurt.”
      * See point No 2. At least this is factually accurate as she has certainly been growing since birth!

      3. “It’s a developmental leap!”
Yes, I’ve read the Wonder Years. I actually like this one as it means that tears = learning. My conclusion..a lot of tears = genius!?

      5. “Something brewing!?”
Yes, this is an interesting one..she’s crying because she’s going to be unwell. If these are they ‘I’m going to be unwell tears’ then let’s brace ourselves for the ‘I’m actually unwell tears’….and yes, when they are genuinely unwell there will be A LOT of tears 😭

But here is what I believe, and this has got me through a many “why is she crying?” questions…

“She’s crying because she’s a baby, and that’s what babies do.”

      FACT.

They all cry. Sometimes for no reason at all, and we should be ok with that.

Yes, it’s tough/draining/soul destroying/traumatic etc etc but it should be expected.

What’s important to remember is that hidden behind all those tears and tantrums will be THE most beautiful smile..and that will make it all worthwhile.

    • The Weaning Diaries | What to feed your baby when they’re ill

Liked this blog about what to feed a sick baby since there seems to be a lot of bug on the go at the moment!

      First Time Mummy

The last few months have brought a lot of coughs and colds our way. This week Austin had just got rid of a cough and two days later a new one arrived – boo! Illnesses are annoying as it is, but of course they affect appetite too and so start the weaning wars….

That’s probably a little harsh to be fair as it isn’t a war – maybe a slight battle. Austin is normally great with food and will eat absolutely anything (although he’s started to learn to blow rasperries after receiving a spoonfull of food, which he thinks is highly amusing – more on that soon!) It’s a real shame to see him refuse his meals as I know he must feel really rotten 😦 But he’s only human and I know when I’ve got a horrible cold I go off my food too.

      So, what have I done…
